Second Grade

Second graders are full of energy and excitement, beginning to blossom as new worlds are opening up to them through books.

Bible

Second graders learn about the importance of making good choices. This class studies the life of Moses, the life of Christ and the life of Daniel.  At the end of the year, we conclude our study of Daniel with a play about Daniel, "God is Faithful." This has become a BIG tradition for second grade!

Language Arts

A wide range of reading abilities exists in second grade, so each child's individual reading level is assessed at the beginning of the school year. We then proceed to master that level and to hopefully move up several more levels throughout the year. A transition is made from the D'Nealian style of manuscript (begun in kindergarten) to cursive handwriting. Second graders are learning to use a dictionary and begin to add phonics, spelling and language skills to their writing.

Math

Our goal is to successfully complete story problems through proficiency with addition and subtraction math facts. Second graders play games to help reinforce their learning, learn about the value of coins and bills, learn about minutes by fives, how to skip count, and how to regroup by carrying and borrowing.

Science

The study of God’s wonderful creation begins with our first class retreat where we play fun nature games.

The first half of the year, we learn the parts and functions of plants and how the plants fit into the food pyramid. We have fun learning how to choose good healthy foods for our bodies.

The second half of the year is spent studying animals. Keeping with tradition, each student creates an animal book called a Creature Feature. This activity helps to prepare the students for future Science Fair Projects.

Social Studies

As the world of a second grader expands through books, so does our study of communities. Before Thanksgiving, we share our heritage by dressing in the attire of our ancestors. Thanksgiving Around the World is closely followed by Christmas Around the World, where we study the Christmas tradtions and customs of other countries.

Field Trips

Field Trips include a walking tour of Lancaster, a walking tour of Philadelphia Historic District,  Zoo America, and the Hans Herr House.

Service Project

Second graders visit the elderly residents of a nearby nursing home and share in holiday celebrations and games. The students and the residents mutually enjoy the time spent together.
